Beyond building

What can one imagine as architecture, moving beyond mere building? This is the question asked in “Out There, Architecture Beyond Building” at the 11th International Architecture Exhibition in Venice. Until 23 November 2008, multiform projects from all four corners of the world will try answer that question.  In its own individual way, each can equally reflect our architectural eclecticism. Zaha Hadid and Dominique Perrault provide some good examples. They take diametrically opposed approaches, but result in the same perfectly mastered technical expertise. A constant presence this year (a prize-winner at the future Guggenheim Hermitage Museum in Vilnius, with towers being designed for Singapore, Riba Prize 2008, etc.), the Anglo-Iraqi architect is taking part in this Venice exhibition, contributing architecture, design and artwork. . “Experimentation within a Long Wave of Innovation” reveals his constant search for an architecture which captures the dynamic complexity of contemporary society with verve. His work comes from his research into architectural language that embraces the latest in digital technology.
With Dominique Perrault, we are no longer talking about a building in itself – of constructed spaces or a casing – but rather of emotional values. The building is there, of course, but it is considered to be one element among others. What we can see is relative. His projects need to be seen in a livelier way than would be the case if merely studying technical designs. His obsession comes flooding out – the architect is even aiming to embrace the absence of structure, leaving all the attraction to emerge from the urban landscape. Beyond building – the genius of the architect comes in his consideration of a place in its entirety – in finding its identity, its consistency, its injection of energy and tension.
