Undulating Green-Roofed Hotel Opens in Norway
JDS Architects recently announced the grand opening of their latest
project - the Two Seasons Hotel situated in the center of Stavanger,
Norway. Appearing almost like an M.C. Escher drawing from above, the
square building is crowned with an undulating green roof that dips
towards the historic section of town and rises dramatically on the far
side to address a nine-story apartment tower. The new hotel has 194
rooms and was designed and built on top of an existing parking garage.
JDS Architects worked with Brandsberg-Dahls Arkitekter to design the
competition-winning plan back in 2008. Construction of the hotel
commenced this summer and it was officially opened on July 28th to
guests.
The
hotel also adds a new element to the street life, invigorating
Stavanger's city center with the addition of a pedestrian-only street.
The new hotel includes 194 rooms and is 6 stories high with an inner
courtyard. It was built on top of an existing underground parking garage
and elevated from the ground level. The elevation above the street
level provides extra privacy to hotel guests. The hotel's undulating
green roof dips to meet the lower historic district of the city center
and rises in the back to address the taller towers. Five levels of
parking sit right below the hotel. The lobby, restaurants and shops sit
at ground level. The lower section of the hotel features four stories of
rooms and the back features 6 stories.
The
form of the hotel was determined by the existing form of the parking
garage below. An inner courtyard and garden provide a quiet protected
space for guests and visitors. The green roof wraps around the roof and
guests can enjoy walking around and taking in views of the city.
