Balancing Barn Receives prestigious red dot award. A design award for sublime detailing!

The Balancing Barn has been announced as one of the winners of a red dot design award, one of the world's most prestigious design competitions. The Balancing Barn received an honourable mention' in the Architecture and Urban Design'category, selected from 4,433 entries from 60 countries. The jury recognises work that shows highly refined detail solutions. The official awards ceremony will take place at the Aalto Theater in Essen, Germany on 4 July 2011.

Living Architecture, a non-profit organization founded by Swiss philosopher and writer Alain de Botton and devoted to the experience of modern architecture, commissioned MVRDV in 2008 to design one of five holiday rental homes in the UK. The Balancing Barn is built on a stunning site beside a Suffolk wildlife nature reserve overlooking a small lake. 30m in length, the barn cantilevers over a slope, with 50% of the building hanging in free space and giving wide views over the Suffolk landscape. It is clad in reflective stainless steel which reflects the surrounding nature and changing seasons. 4 en-suite bedrooms, kitchen and a large dining room accommodate up to 8 people. Mole Architects from Cambridge were executive architects and Dutch designers Studio Makkink & Bey fitted out the interior.

All winners, comprising a total of 1,500 products in 18 categories, from architecture to lighting design and entertainment technology, will be on display from 5 July to 1 August 2011 in the exhibition "Design on stage - winners red dot award: product design 2011" in the red dot design museum at the world heritage site of the Zeche Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex in Essen, Germany.

The red dot award is granted annually to designs which stand out for their exceptional quality and refined detail solutions. The award dates back to 1955 and is now the world's largest and most distinguished design competition. It breaks down into the three disciplines ‘red dot award: product design', ‘red dot award: communication design' and ‘red dot award: design concept'.
