GREEN BUILDING

First Prize

Archives nationales EDF, Bure (France)
Architect: LAN Architecture (France)
The main objective of this strategic project is to realise a « zero energy » building based on an intelligent shape, impressive façade, a choice of adapted systems and the production of renewable energy (photovoltaic and heat pump). Waste water management will reduce the ecological footprint and it will contribute to the symbiosis of the 5-storey building with an area of about 1400m².
To support the image of a light building, the architects stacked, numerically cut chromium steel panels with  concrete frames (2 layers – structure + finishing – with an additional 30 cm layer of insulation). Although the building has not yet been finished, it impressed the jury because of the technical research and systems, but also because of the restraint in form, for the simple and useful façades and the intelligence of the layout.

Public Award

Public Housing, Umbrete (Seville, Spain)
Architect: Solinas Verd Arquitectos (Spain)
These 26 social houses are the result of a search for a prototype for social housing in which there is a succession of empty and filled spaces following the example of traditional Andalusian architecture. The enclosed patios and vegetation provide ample ventilation for the building.

Special Mention

Gymnasium, Barbera del Valles (Barcelona, Spain)
Architect: H Arquitectes (Spain)
The expression of this simple volume has been rendered dynamic because of the slope of the roof and is connected to the logical construction of the wooden strips (system of light walls). This appealed to the jury. The outer cladding of polycarbonate panels contributes to the energy-economics on the southern façade and provides light to the northern façade.

FACADES

First Prize

Vicar Theatre, Almeria (Spain)
Architect: Solinas Verd Arquitectos (Spain)
Built in the heart of an established suburb, this complex building is animated by an impressive façade constructed of copper bands applied in coordinated colours. The jury stated that project radiates sensitivity through the sophisticated treatment and arrangement of the volumes, the interaction between space and light, the use of the same material horizontally and vertically, the clever variation of colours which provides sheen and depth to the front façade and the fine work of the moving sun screens.

Public Award

SAHRDC (South Asian Human Rights Documentation Centre), New Delhi (India)
Architect: Anagram Architects (India)
Intended to protect a small building from the sight and sounds of the street and to decrease the effects of the sun economically, the façade was designed so that it is completely oriented to the south, like a dynamic skin that reflects the city’s animation in a way that is flowing and dynamic. This skin, in striking recycled brick worked in motifs of the Asian tradition of sun walls, provides thermal protection due to the porous material and the technique used.

Special Mention

Sheep House, Almere (the Netherlands)
Architect: 70F architecture (the Netherlands)
The stables have been designed to allow visitors. The façade cladding is in red cedar on a pine structure. Only the arched rafters are steel. The jury praised the perfect integration into the environment and the overall image of the building which is striking in its simplicity.

INTERIOR DESIGN

First Prize

Olivomare restaurant, London (Great Britain)
Architect Pierluigi Piu (Italy)
Fish restaurant Olivomare refers to the oceanic world in its formal appearance and decorations without using any blue: the entrance resembles a fishing net, luminous spirals of nylon that look just like sea anemones, a large wall with fish cut into pieces with a laser, a large slanting wall in sand relief formed by the wind or a coral reef in the sanitary areas.
The jury members were impressed with the visual and tangible impression, and the simplicity and the tranquillity of this project; the stylisation of the oceanic elements shows great sophistication, the choice of patterns and materials, the play of light, attention to detail and the placement of the walls that suggests good acoustics.

Public Award

FriendHouse Hotel, Dnepropetrovsk (Ukraine)
Architect Ryntovt Design (Ukraine)
This small one-storey hotel is on the banks of the Orel, famous for its eco-architecture inspired by nature in perfect harmony with the environment. The materials (wood and straw) and the construction techniques are based on local practices.

Special Mention 1

Boomba hair designer, Bruxelles (Belgique)
Architecte: Marcella Schiepers (Belgique)

Special Mention 2

Bureau All Capital, Amsterdam (Netherlands)
Architect: i29 ET Eckhardt&Leeuwenstein (Netherlands)
Each of the 4 meeting- and reception rooms adapted for this Dutch investment group captures the essential elements of money and power.
The large circular lampshades throw oval patterns over the entire area. The jury appreciated this specific intervention which leaves the existing structures of the 17th century building intact.

STUDENTS GREEN BUILDING

Public Award

Himmelblau Kreuzberg
Tim Nørlund Jensen (Denmark)
Destined as a Berlin suburb, the apartment building could become an architectural signal to draw attention to a previously underprivileged area. The tower has been drawn like a vertical city which favours variety and ecological building: natural ventilation as a result of the 2m space in the double façade, atriums, solar panels, wind mill, the use of river water provides cooling.

Special Mention 1

Environment Camp
Tim Nørlund Jensen (Denmark)
Temporary and versatile pavilion system developed for tropical regions, and easy to assemble and dismantle. A series of frames form the interconnection and integrate the wall-, floor-, and roof elements. The textile fibre roof provides protection from the sun and good natural ventilation. The jury noted the sophisticated construction system in materials that facilitate construction and transport.

Special Mention 2

Green in Between
Rami Kopty (Israel)
With a view to breathing new life into Haifa’s old harbour, this school project seeks to create connecting spaces which change the overall perception of the environment. The use of roof- and wall vegetation was considered one of the strong points of the design of the buildings and goes beyond the merely decorative. The jury appreciated the project which developed natural space, despite maintenance and expenditure problems.
