The $11 million Admissions Building at Trinity College is a three story building sited along the eastern sloping edge of the Chapel Quadrangle. The building houses offices for Enrollment Management, Undergraduate Admissions, Student Financial Aid, Student Accounts, and Career Services. The upper entry floor is dedicated to the public functions of Undergraduate Admissions, and Enrollment Management. The middle floor houses Financial Aid, Student Accounts, and "back of house" processing and storage functions for Undergraduate Admissions. Career Services, on the lowest level, has an entrance off of the Lower Long Walk which serves as the primary entrance for enrolled students.
The building's design makes strong references to Trinity's rich architectural heritage while effectively fulfilling functional requirements. Sited adjacent to the Koeppel Center, the Admissions Building extends along a slope toward the Chapel to the south. The exterior configuration draws its forms, materials and scale from the adjacent residential scaled buildings, as well as the Chapel. To mitigate its apparent mass, the building is built into the slope. The top floor is designed as a transparent pavilion sitting on a solid base composed of the two lower floors. The plan is organized around a north/south circulation spine, bisected by a central entry and lobby space which is anchored by a monumental stairway and a fireplace on each floor.
The building utilizes materials that convey quality, substance, warmth, hospitality and tradition. The top floor is rendered as a glass and wood pavilion structured by a regular pattern of limestone piers. The rhythm established by the piers reinforces and complements the rhythm of the expressed limestone pilasters of the historic Chapel. The resulting "cloister" effect makes for an intimate sense of scale and place, defines the Chapel Quadrangle's edge, and provides transparency and views to the rest of the campus.
The roof is gray-green slate similar to the neighboring chapel. The west edge of the top floor pavilion is softened by plant covered trellises. The lower two floors are clad in rusticated brownstone, like the Long Walk buildings, and are more opaque, with discrete, punched window openings.
